"Visit beautiful Vergas"

The fortune program said to me this morning:

Visit beautiful Vergas, Minnesota.
I thought this was a little odd, even for fortune. A little research shows that

a) Vergas does exist: it's in Otter Tail county, enormously isolated, and has a population of two hundred and eighty-three (but still, what's it doing in fortune?)

b) it's been in fortune lists for well over a decade now

c) this has caused the words to appear almost randomly scattered across the Web and Usenet.

How very weird. I wonder whether anyone's gone there just because of the fortune; perhaps the place has a sign saying "Welcome to Vergas, pop. 283. Home of a random line in the fortunes database."
